&glosstext= IRONY:

Irony is when we say one thing and mean the opposite. To tell if something is ironic we often need to hear the tone of voice being used. For example take the sentence: I love washing the dishes, first say this line as if do love washing the dishes, and then as if you dont! With the second statement, use an ironic tone of voice to communicate that what is meant is the opposite of what is being said.

We can also have what is called an irony of situation. In Base Details Siegfried Sassoon attacks the army majors in World War I by pretending he wants to be one. The poem is built around this irony of situation which allows the poet to show us what he really thinks the majors are like:

If I were fierce, and bald, and short of breath,
I'd live with scarlet Majors at the Base...

...And when the war is done and youth stone dead,
I'd toddle safely home and die - in bed.
