&glosstext= <b>REPETITION:</b><br><br>This occurs when certain words or phrases are repeated in a poem. Repetition is sometimes used by poets to emphasise an idea or rhythm and often occurs at the end of a poem. In Shakespeare's Sonnet 18 we find a number of repetitions in the closing couplet:<br><br><b>		So long</b> as men can breathe, or eyes can see,<br><b>		So long</b> lives <u>this</u>, and <u>this</u> gives life to thee.<br><br>The repetition of "so long" at the beginning of each line strengthens the rhythm of the lines and helps bring the poem to a satisfying close. The repetition also helps to emphasise the idea that the poet's love will endure for a long time: "So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see".
